ROBERT MOODY, "IN DEFENCE OF CANADA: A WAR WE WERE RIGHT TO STAY OUT OF -- APOLOGIZE TO LOYALISTS," KINGSTON WHIG STANDARD (MARCH 28, 2003).
A number of Kingston residents seem to feel compelled to apologize to the United States for Canada's decision to act like a sovereign nation. While they are in an apologetic mood, they might consider making another apology - to their ancestors.
Kingston would not even exist as a city without the courage and determination of the United Empire Loyalist refugees who arrived here in 1783, fleeing a U.S. regime that was only big enough for one opinion. I thought Canadians were still proud of this heritage. Do we want to trade it in for a Sunday drive down the Freedom Parkway?
There used to be an adage to the effect that "friends don't let friends drive drunk." I guess the new version demands that friends pile into the front seat with the driver and volunteer to pay for the gas.
