DISCUSSION TOPIC: BLACK ATHENA
Some Questions
What was the "Black Athena" debate about?
What is the nature of Martin Bernal's thesis? Why did he pick his title? Why does he indict traditional Greek historiography? How does he distinguish between what he calls the "Ancient" and the "Aryan" models of Greek civilization?
Is Egypt "African?" Was Egypt "black?" Does this matter?
Why do you think the Black Athena debate generated such emotion, both within and outside the academy?
What is "race" and what, if anything, does the Black Athena debate contribute to the discussion about the meaning of race?
Who are the Afrocentrists and where are they placed in this debate?
Does the Black Athena debate matter? Why or why not?
What are your criticisms of Bernal? What your criticisms of Lefkowitz?
Mary Lefkowitz accuses the Afrocentrists of substituting "myth" for "history." What is the difference between myth and history? Do you think that we can get at the truth in history? Do you think that there is one truth in history?
