ASSOS AND THE TROAD

Aristotle was the guest at Assos between 348 and 345 BCE of the eunuch ruler Hermias, who attempted to put Plato's theories into practice.  St. Paul passed through the ancient city on his third Biblical journey, and the town is mentioned to in Acts.  The ruins today include a temple to Athena upon the Acropolis, a theatre, and a necropolis.  The medieval village of Behram Kale is just below ancient Assos, and includes a fourteenth-century mosque built by Sultan Mural I upon a sixth-century Byzantine church.  An Ottoman bridge from the same period is on the town's outskirts.
