CATAL HOYUK

The Neolithic site of Catal Hoyuk was discovered by the British archaeologist James Mellaart in 1958.  Located some sixty kilometers south of Konya, it dates back to 7000 BCE.  Some ten thousand people lived here in flat-roofed square houses with rooftop entrances.  Visitors need to be accompanied by an official museum guide to enter the site.  Most of the important archaeological finds are displayed in the Museum of Civilizations in Ankara or in the museum in Konya.
