INTRODUCTION:  SOUTH CENTRAL ANATOLIA


The Hittites were based on the Anatolian Plateau during the Bronze Age.  Cappadocia became a place of refuge for Christians from the seventh to the eleventh centuries CE at the time of Arab and Turkish invasion into the steppe.  Konya was both the capital of the Seljuk Empire and home base for the Mevlevi sect.
